For Krein spaces of analytic functions, see the author [J. Funct. Anal. 81, No. 2, 219--259 (1988; Zbl 0666.46024)]. Such spaces appear in the invariant subspace theory of continuous transformations in Hilbert spaces. The relationship between invariant subspaces and factorizations for continuous transformations in Hilbert spaces, and more generally in Krein spaces, is based upon the concept of a ``linear system'' ( state space, external space; main, input, output transformations, external operator; canonical form, difference-quotient transformation, transfer function). In the present article, a generalization is obtained of a construction of linear systems with given transfer function which is due to the author and \textit{J. Rovnyak} [``Perturb. Theory Appl. Quantum Mech., Wisconsin, Madison 1965, 295--392 (1966; Zbl 0203.45101)]. The construction makes use of the Krein space generalization of complementation theory. Of particular interest is a uniqueness theorem for spaces with desired properties. The article contains 8 theorems, and some proofs are rather long. The author remarks at several places that it is not known whether certain hypotheses can be omitted. In a note added in proof, he mentions that a gap in the proof of the first theorem was filled by \textit{A. Yang} in her doctoral thesis (Purdue, 1989) by making a stronger hypothesis, and that it is not known whether the result is true as stated.
