The authors consider the planar motion of uniform prismatic beam of finite length. Their attention is focused on stretching and bending, which introduce nonlinear effects into the beam behaviour, and on the corresponding boundary problem. The nonlinearity is the thoroughgoing contribution of the authors because only the linear problem was considered till now. Presenting the assumptions under which they consider the beam, the boundary problem is studied by functional-analytic methods. The principal result of the paper is that, under some conditions, the closed-loop is uniformly asymptotically stable, that is, \(E(t)\to 0\) as \(t\to\infty\) uniformly on each bounded set \(E(0)\leq M\) of initial data, where \(E(t)\) is the total energy of the system and \(t\) is the time. The authors establish the existence and the uniqueness of the nonhomogeneous weak and strong solutions.
