An example is constructed of a simple, directly finite, (von Neumann) regular ring which is right self-injective but not left self-injective. (This was announced without proof [in Ring theory, Proc. 20th Symp., Okayama 1987, 141--145 (1987; Zbl 0635.16010)].) This example provides a negative answer to a question raised by a paper of \textit{J.-E. Roos} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. A 266, 120--123 (1968; Zbl 0165.05003)], in which it was proved that every directly finite, regular, right self-injective ring of Type I is left self-injective.
