    A Banach space \(X\) possesses the Daugavet property if every rank-1 linear operator \(T: X \to X\) satisfies the equation \(\|I + T\| = 1 + \|T\|\). The classical examples of such spaces are \(C(K)\) on a perfect compact \(K\), \(L_1\) and \(L_\infty\) on non-atomic measure spaces. More examples can easily be constructed with the help of \(\ell_1\)- or \(\ell_\infty\)-direct sums of spaces or with some more involved direct sums considered in Section 5 of \textit{D. Bilik} et al. [Positivity 9, No. 1, 45--62 (2005; Zbl 1099.46009)]. The authors demonstrate that among Musielak-Orlicz function spaces on a \(\sigma\)-finite non-atomic complete measure space equipped with either the Luxemburg norm or the Orlicz norm there are no involved examples of spaces with the Daugavet property. Namely, the only examples are of the form \(L_1\), \(L_\infty\), \(L_1 \oplus_1 L_\infty\) or \(L_1 \oplus_\infty L_\infty\). In particular, this leads to complete characterizations of the Daugavet property in the weighted interpolation spaces, the variable exponent Lebesgue spaces (Nakano spaces) and the Orlicz spaces. Some results about uniformly non-square points and diameter 2 property in function spaces are also proved. The authors include an appendix with a direct self-contained proof of Köthe duality of Musielak-Orlicz spaces.
