Let \(\mathcal L\) be the sublaplacian on the Heisenberg group \(H_ n\). The following theorem is proved: Let \(\varphi\) be \(\nu\) times differentiable and satisfy \(|\varphi^{(k)}(t)|\leq C(1+| t|)^{-k}\) for \(k=0,1,\dots,\nu\) where \(\nu=n+2\) if \(n\) is even and \(\nu=n+3\) if \(n\) is odd. Then \(\varphi({\mathcal L})\) is a bounded operator on \(L^ p(H_ n)\), \(1<p<\infty\). This multiplier theorem is an improvement of \textit{G. Mauceri}'s result [in Pac. J. Math. 95, 143-159 (1981; Zbl 0474.43009)] and the proof of the result is based on Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory of \(g\)-functions.
