Let \(K\) be a skew field and \(K^{n \times n}\) denote the set of all \(n \times n\) matrices with entries in \(K\). For a matrix \(A \in K^{n \times n}\) a matrix \(X \in K^{n \times n}\) is said to be the group inverse of \(A\) if \(AXA=A\), \(XAX=X\) and \(AX=XA\). The authors prove that the group inverse of the block matrix \(M=\left [\begin{smallmatrix} A& A \\ B&0\end{smallmatrix} \right]\) \((A, B \in K^{n \times n}\), \(A^2=A)\) exists if and only if \(\roman{rank}(B)=\roman{rank}(BAB)\) and give a representation of the group inverse of \(M\). Some results of \textit{N. Castro-Gonzalez} and \textit{E. Dopazo} [Linear Algebra Appl. 400, 253--269 (2005; Zbl 1076.15007)] and \textit{C.-G. Cao} and \textit{X.-M. Tang} [Int. Math. Forum 31, No. 29--32, 1511--1517 (2006; Zbl 1119.15002)] can be deduced from the results of the present paper.
