The authors compare three techniques to analyse the behavior of a particular nonlinear dynamical system corresponding to a two-area four-machine power system: 1) linear modal analysis (using Taylor series expansion of the vector field); 2) normal form analysis (introduced by Henri Poincaré for polynomial vector fields, consists in applying successive polynomial transformations to yield a local linear model with the same qualitative behavior); 3) modal series analysis (introduced by some of the authors). Based on experiments, the authors then argue that modal series analysis is well suited for the study of their stressed power systems.
