The article introduces a cohomology theory for differential graded categories with values in bimodules over them. This cohomology theory is a generalization of André-Quillen cohomology [see \textit{D. Quillen}, Appl. categorical Algebra, Proc. Sympos. Pure Math. 17, 65--87 (1970; Zbl 0234.18101)], which is defined for commutative rings. As the ordinary André-Quillen cohomology, the cohomology theory that is presented here is defined by using cotangent complexes (in this case of differential graded categories). The author relates his cohomology theory with Hochschild cohomology of differential graded categories and derives some basic properties, like exact sequences or the Mayer-Vietoris property. Finally, the cohomology theory is put to use as a natural domain for the k-invariants [see \textit{G. Tabuada}, J. Algebra 321, No.~12, 3850--3877 (2009; Zbl 1173.18005)] of homologically connective differential graded categories.
