For a field \(F\) of characteristic not 2, let \(WF\) be the Witt ring of quadratic forms over \(F\), \(F_ q\) the maximal Galois 2-extensions of \(F\), \(G_ F\) the Galois group of \(F_ q\) over \(F\), and \(\theta_ F: G_ F\to\mathbb{Z}_ 2^ \times\) the cyclotomic character. A Witt ring \(WF\) is said to have elementary type if it can be built from the indecomposable Witt rings of finite, real-closed and local fields by iterating two operations of ``direct product'' and group ring formation. In this paper, it is shown that for any field of characteristic not 2, \(WF\) is a finitely generated elementary type Witt ring if and only if the pair \((G_ F,\theta_ F)\) can be constructed from \(\mathbb{Z}_ 2\), \(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\) and certain Demushkin pro-2 groups with special characters by operations of free product and semidirect product (Theorem 3.5). A realization theorem for dyadic factors of an elementary type \(WF\) by 2- extensions of \(F\) is proved to show the `only if' part of the above (Theorem 3.2).
