The author studies block matrices \(A=[A_{ij}]\), where every block \(A_{ij}\) is Hermitian and \(A_{ii}\) is positive definite. Similar to the relation between \(M\)- and \(H\)-matrices, the class \(H_ m^ k\) of generalized \(H\)-matrices is introduced, and some general properties of the class \(H_ m^ k\) are discussed. After that, the convergence of the block Jacobi and the block Gauss- Seidel method for generalized \(H\)-matrices are proved. The incomplete LDU-factorization for matrices of a subclass of \(H_ m^ k\) is studied as well. Furthermore, some equivalent conditions for a matrix to be a generalized \(H\)-matrix are formulated. Finally, properties of special block tridiagonal matrices arising from the solution of Euler equations are discussed.
