Poincaré complex diagonals (Q2471028): Difference between revisions

Let \(M\) be a Poincaré duality space of dimension \(d \geq 4\). This paper describes the obstruction to realizing the diagonal map \(M \rightarrow M \times M\) by a Poincaré embedding. The obstruction depends only on the parity of \(d\) and the fundamental group. It vanishes if the complex is simply connected. Indeed it is unknown whether it can in fact be non trivial. The proof is homotopy theoretic.
