A variational approach is used to smooth given data and functions. A useful method is the spline smoothing using semi-norms of \(m\)th partial derivatives of the functions which can be applied to scalar or vector valued functions and data. In this paper, vector splines are used in tandem with the variational approach. Among other things, existence and uniqueness of the splines are discussed and the convergence properties are addressed.
