In the paper under review, the author introduces the notion of a conformal design by using language of vertex operator algebras. He presents certain results which are analogous to the results for block designs and spherical designs. He proves that a vertex operator algebra \(V\) with a compact automorphism group \(G\) leads to a conformal design if the fixed point subalgebra \(V ^G\) has large minimal weight. He describes the construction of derived designs. He proves that the subspace of an extremal self-dual vertex operator algebra of fixed degree form conformal \(11\)-, \(7\)- or \(3\)-designs. The Moonshine module is an example of an extremal vertex operator algebra supporting \(11\)-designs. The author also studies the classification of conformal \(6\)- and \(8\)-designs.
