In the paper under review the authors provide an abstract framework for certain generalizations of root systems and their associated Coxeter groupoids which cover root systems of a large class of quantized Kac-Moody algebras and Lie superalgebras as well as Nichols algebras appearing in the recent classification of finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebras with Abelian group-like part due to Schneider and Andruskiewitsch (but not generalized Kac-Moody algebras à la Borcherds). The authors prove that every generalized root system has a Coxeter groupoid coming with a natural faithful representation which therefore is the natural analogue of the Weyl group of a classical root system. This answers a question of \textit{V. Serganova} [Commun. Algebra 24, No. 13, 4281-4299 (1996; Zbl 0902.17002)]. Moreover, the Coxeter groupoid satisfies a weak exchange property and as a consequence an analogue of Matsumoto's theorem. The paper concludes with two examples, one being a finite dimensional simple Lie superalgebra of type \(D\) and one appearing in the classification of Nichols algebras but being neither related to Kac-Moody algebras nor to Lie superalgebras. Both examples show that the natural generalization of the exchange condition from Coxeter groups to Coxeter groupoids does not always hold.
