An adaptive finite element method is derived for the numerical solution of a one-dimensional, implicit, moving-boundary problem: the oxygen diffusion with absorption problem of \textit{J. Crank} and \textit{R. S. Gupta} [J. Inst. Math. Appl. 10, 19-33 (1972; Zbl 0247.65064) and ibid. 10, 296- 304 (1972; Zbl 0299.65049)]. The method includes a moving grid adapted to the moving boundary. A moving-boundary-velocity iteration procedure is described. Numerical results in one dimension are presented. An extension of the method to two dimensions is suggested.
