    The paper deals with the nonlinear parabolic equation \[ u_t = \nabla \cdot (a(u) b(x) \nabla u) + g(x,t) f(u) \quad \text{in} \quad D \times (0,T) \] equipped by the boundary condition \[ \frac{\partial u}{\partial n} +\sigma(x,t) u = 0 \quad \text{on} \quad \partial D \times (0,T) \] and the initial condition \[ u(x,0) = u_o(x) > 0 \quad \text{in} \quad \overline D \] where \(D \subset \mathbb R^N\) \((N \geq 2)\) is a smooth bounded domain. It is assumed that \(a,b\) are positive functions, \(g\) a nonnegative function and that the compatibility conditions hold. The main results of the paper give the sufficient conditions for the solution \(u(x,t)\) to be a global solution or to blow up in finite time \(T\). The proved theorems are illustrated by means of some examples. As the authors have remarked, the paper extends earlier results obtained by \textit{A. Friedman} and \textit{B. McLeod} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 34, 425--447 (1985; Zbl 0576.35068)].
