The Cauchy problem for one dimensional gas dynamics Euler equations is considered in Lagrangian variables. The initial velocity \(u_0\) and the initial pressure \(p_0\) are assumed regular: \(u_0 \in H^1(\mathbb{R})\), \(p_0\in H^2 (\mathbb{R})\). As for the initial entropy \(s_0\), it is assumed that \(s_0 \in\) \(L^2 (\mathbb{R})\cap\) \(L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R})\). Given a local solution \((u,p)\in\) \(C^1 ([0,T];H^1(\mathbb{R}))\), \(s\equiv s_0\), on some interval \((0,T)\), it is proved that this solution can be obtained by the vanishing (artificial) viscosity method on a smaller interval \((0,T')\), \(T' <T\).
