The symmetric genus of a finite group \(G\) is the smallest integer such that \(G\) acts faithfully on a closed orientable surface of genus \(g\). The author shows that the sporadic Fischer group \(Fi_{23}\) can be generated by an involution and an element of order 3, whose product has order 8. This is used to show that \(Fi_{23}\) has symmetric genus 85,197,301,526,937,601.
