    Let \(s=\sigma+it\) be a complex number with \(0<\sigma<1\) and \(t>0\). Let \(q\geq 2\) be a rational integer and \(\chi\) a Dirichlet character modulo \(q\). The approximate functional equation of the corresponding Dirichlet \(L\)-function may be written as \[ L(s,\chi)=\sum_{n\leq X}\frac{\chi(n)}{n^s}+\frac{(2i\pi)^sq^{-s}}{\Gamma(s)}\sum_{1\leq Y}\frac{G(\chi,-n)}{n^{1-s}}+R(\chi,s,X,Y) \] where \(X\) and \(Y\) are real positive numbers satisfying \(2\pi XY=qt\) and where \(G(\chi,p)\) denotes the Gauss sum \(\sum_{k=1}^q\chi(k)e^{\frac{2i\pi kp}{q}}. \) The author shows that for \(\chi\) non principal and \(X,Y\geq 1\) if \(X\leq Y\), then \[ |R(\chi,s,X,Y)|\leq \left (38.3q^{1/2}+132.3\log q+\frac{1.435q}{\sigma\sqrt{XY}}e^{-\pi^2Y/(5q)}\right )\frac{q^{1/2}}{X^\sigma}, \] if \(X\geq Y\), then \[ |R(\chi,s,X,Y)|\leq \left (75.7\log q+0.93\frac{q}{\sigma}e^{-\pi^2Y/(20q)}\right )\left |\frac{(2i\pi)^sq^{1-s}}{\Gamma(s)Y^{1-s}}\right|, \] and, for \(\chi\) primitive non principal and \(X,Y\geq 1\) if \(X\leq Y\), then \[ |R(\chi,s,X,Y)|\leq\left (167.2\log q+\frac{1.435q}{\sigma\sqrt{XY}}e^{-\pi^2Y/(5q)}\right )\frac{q^{1/2}}{X^\sigma}, \] if \(X\geq Y\), then \[ |R(\chi,s,X,Y)|\leq \left (75.7\log q+0.93\frac{q}{\sigma}e^{-\pi^2Y/(20q)}\right )\left |\frac{(2i\pi)^sq^{1-s}}{\Gamma(s)Y^{1-s}}\right |. \] He also gives an approximate functional equation for the Lerch zeta function.
