The author proves that a closed symplectic four-manifold does not admit any smooth circle action with contractible orbits. The statement is true without assuming that the action is symplectic. The second result states that in every even dimension bigger than four there exists a closed symplectic manifold with a symplectic free circle action whose orbits are contractible. The six dimensional example is the mapping torus of an orientation preserving diffeomorphism of a K3 surface. Finally, the author proves that a compact complex surface with a free circle action with contractible orbits is a primary Hopf surface diffeomorphic to \(S^3 \times S^1\).
