The authors generalize the construction of the Drinfel'd double of a finite dimensional Hopf algebra to quasi-Hopf algebras. If \({\mathcal G}\) is a finite dimensional quasi-Hopf algebra, the double \({\mathcal D}({\mathcal G})\) is a quasi-triangular quasi-Hopf algebra which is isomorphic to \(\widehat{\mathcal G}\otimes {\mathcal G}\) as a vector space, where \(\widehat{\mathcal G}\) is the dual of \(\mathcal G\). Explicit formulas for the product, coproduct, antipode and the \(R\)-matrix are given. It is proved that the category of finite dimensional representations of \({\mathcal D}({\mathcal G})\) is just the double category of \(\mathcal G\)-modules defined by S. Majid. The construction of the double is also generalized to weak quasi-Hopf algebras.
