The author constructs a family of irreducible highest weight modules over the \(\mathcal{W}_3\) algebra with central charge \(-2\) in terms of a free bosonic field. The modules are parametrized by points on a rational curve. It is shown that these modules exhaust all the irreducible modules with the above central charge. Applying the known classification of irreducible modules over a Heisenberg vertex algebra, the above result is also naturally extended to the irreducible modules over the vertex algebra \(\mathcal{W}_{1+\infty}\) with central charge \(-1\).
