A ring \(R\) with identity is called \(n\)-fold iff, for all \(a_ i, b_ i \in R\) such that \(Ra_ i + Rb_ i = R\), there exists \(c \in R\) such that \(a_ i + cb_ i \in GL_ 1R\), where \(i = 1,\dots,n\). In particular \(SR_ 2\)-rings (for example, semi-local rings) are 1-fold rings. In this paper the author proves that, if \(R\) is a 6-fold ring, then the subgroups of \(GL_ 2(R)\) normalized by the elementary matrices can be completely classified in terms of the quasi-ideals of \(R\). (The notion of a quasi-ideal is originally due to Vaserstein.) In a previous paper [Math. Ann. 285, 221-231 (1989; Zbl 0662.20039)] \textit{P. Menal} and \textit{L. N. Vaserstein} have established a classification identical to that of the author for the case where \(R\) is a local ring whose factor ring by its Jacobson radical has at least 4 elements.
