The author studies the following second order Volterra integro-differential equation in a Banach space \(X\): \[ u''(t)= Au(t)+ \int^t_0 B(t-s) u(s)ds +f(t), \quad t\in[0,T]; \quad u(0)= x,\;u'(0) =y \tag{*} \] where \(A:D(A) \subset X\to X\) is the generator of a sine family of operators \(S(t)\), \(B(\cdot)x\) is measurable for each \(x\in D(A)\), \(\| B(t)x \|\leq b(t) \| x\|_{D(A)}\) for some \(b\in L^1_{loc}\) and for \(t\geq 0\) \[ \sup\left\{ \Bigl\| \int^t_0 B(t -s)S(s)xds \Bigr\|,\;x\in D(A),\;\| x\|\leq 1\right\} <\infty. \] Under these assumptions it is proved first that there exists a solution family for the integral equation associated to (*) \[ u(t)= tx+A \int^t_0 \int^s_0 u(r)dr ds+ \int^b_0 B(t-s) \int^s_0 \int^r_0 u(\tau)d \tau dr ds. \tag{**} \] This result lets the author prove the existence of a unique strict solution of (*) in the case \(B(t)= b(t)A\) when \(x\in D(A^2)\), \(y\in D(A)\) and \(f\in C(0,T; D(A))\). Applications are given to the wave equation with memory in the paper \(x=L^p (\mathbb{R}^n)\) with \(n=2,3\) and \(p\geq 1\).
