This is a well-written book on traffic theory, dealing with some popular models of traffic flow as well as the identification of appropriate use of the various models. The book consists of four chapters: traffic flow theories, queueing and delays at isolated intersections, traffic control, and traffic generation, distribution and assignment. After a general introduction to the traffic flow, Chapter 1 presents macroscopic traffic flow theory and microscopic traffic flow theory. Through the use of the theory of renewal processes and Queueing Theory, Chapter 2 gives the performance analysis of the traffic systems, in particular, the effect of stop or yield signs, and the effect of traffic signs. Chapter 3 is devoted to the optimal traffic control. Formally, the optimization of the operation of a single traffic light or a group of traffic lights, optimal synchronization schemes, and optimal operation devices in a traffic networks. With the help of Graph Theory of flows in networks, the traffic generation, distribution and assignment are investigated in Chapter 4. This is a competently written book, which should be of interest to researchers in Transportation Science and Operatiosn Research. Material from this book could also be used in courses on Transportation Science, the application of Queueing Theory, the application of Graph Theory, and the application of Optimal Control.
