A linear map \(f\) from an algebra \(A\) into an \(A\)-bimodule \(M\) is called a generalized Lie derivation is there exists a map \(d\colon A\to M\) such that \(f(xy-yx)=f(x)y-f(y)x+xd(y)-yd(x)\) for all \(x,y\in A\). The main theorem describes the structure of such maps on algebras satisfying certain technical conditions. This result is, in particular, applicable to various triangular algebras. Several examples supporting the results are provided. Generalized Jordan derivations are also considered.
