The authors calculate magnetoelectric coupling coefficients in fibrous composites in which rectilinear piezoelectric fibers are imbedded into an infinite matrix of piezoelectric material. Both fibers and the matrix are transversely isotropic. It has been shown that such composites have a much higher magnetoelectric coupling coefficient than that of individual materials. As such, they seem to have a very bright future as components of smart materials. The authors first calculate explicitly all relevant components of the generalised Eshelby tensor for ellipsoidal inclusion, and then Eshelby tensors corresponding to fibers of elliptical, circular and ribbon-shaped cross-sections; penny-shaped inclusions are derived as special cases. Finally, Eshelby tensors are effectively employed to obtain closed-form expressions for magnetoelectric coupling coefficients.
