A micromechanics model is developed for Reissner-Mindlin plates based on a generalized eigenstrain formulation. In this framework, the author obtains an analytical solution for elliptical inclusion embedded in an infinite thick plate. In particular, the first-order asymptotic solution of the elliptical inclusion problem is obtained in explicit form. As an application, variational bounds are derived to estimate the effective elastic stiffnesses of Reissner-Mindlin plates, specifically, the flexural rigidity and the effective transverse shear modulus.
