On the unit circle, the famous duality theorem of C. Fefferman asserts that the dual of the real Hardy space \(H^1_{\text{Re}}\) is BMO, the space of functions of bounded mean oscillation. As is also well known, this duality theorem extends to higher dimensional torus; \(H^1_{\text{Re}}{}^*= \text{product BMO}\). However, the space product BMO has been known to be not equivalent to a higher dimensional analogues of characterizations in terms of bounded mean oscillation and Carleson measures. Let bmo denote the higher dimensional analogue by means of bounded mean oscillation and \(\text{BMO}_{\text{Rect}}\) denote the higher dimensional analogue by means of Carleson measures. It is also known that \(\text{bmo}\subset \text{product BMO} \subset \text{BMO}_{\text{Rect}}\) and both inclusions are proper. In this paper the authors study the spaces bmo and \(\text{BMO}_{\text{Rect}}\), as well as their analytic subspaces, in the context of Hankel operators and Carleson measures. They prove several results showing that these spaces recover many features that were not carried over to a higher dimensional torus by product BMO.
