The authors design a hybrid method which combines the global characterization of the stress field with locally high resolution in chosen subdomains. It is meant to be able to handle particular situations involving singular features such as cracks, inclusions, corners or notches. On the other hand it is suitable to benefit by modern parallel computing facilities. The authors carry out the formulation of the method in an appropriate functional frame as well as the corresponding discretizations and asymptotic error estimates. Some computational results in two-and three dimensional elasticity are also displayed.
