The author investigates gradient systems with wiggly energies arising in the study of kinetics of martensitic phase transitions. A rigorous derivation of averaged or homogenized equation is presented. The main result is that the space breaks into: a bounded set surrounding \(\{\nabla F^{-1}(0)\}\) where there is only sticking; a transition region outside this set, where the dynamics is a combination of sticking and slipping, and the rest of the plane which contains a countable number of closed domains called resonance zones with nonempty interior, and their nowhere dense complement. The author also studies the linear transport equation associated with the wiggly gradient flow, and shows that its homogenization limit is not well posed.
