It is a classical problem to provide criteria for a vector bundle \(V\) over a smooth complex projective variety \(X\) to be the direct sum of line bundles, say splitting criteria. Inside those split bundles it is also of interest to characterize the trivial ones. There are several splitting criteria for some particular bases like projective spaces, quadrics, Grassmannians and others (see the Introduction of the paper under review and references therein) stated in different terms (cohomology of the twists of the bundle, restrictions to some particular subvarieties of the base). The main goal of the paper under review is to provide conditions on \(X\), on \(V\) and on some divisor \(D \in |d L|\) (\(L \in \mathrm{Pic}(X)\)) on \(X\) for the splitting of \(V\) to be equivalent to that of the restriction \(V|_D\) to \(D\). The main result is recalled as \textit{splitting criteria} theorem in the Introduction. If \(\dim(X)\geq 3\) then the equivalence stated above holds when: (a) \(L\) is \((\dim(X)-3)\)-ample and \(H^1(\mathrm{End}(V)|_D \otimes L|_D^{-a})=0\) for \(a \geq d\); (b) \(H^i(X,H)=0\) for \(i=1,2\) and any divisor \(H\), \(L\) is \((\dim(X)-4)\)-positive, \(D\) smooth; (c) \(H^1(X,H)=0\) for any divisor \(H\), \(L\) is \((\dim(X)-4)\)-ample and spanned, \(D\) very general. As an explicit example, in Theorem 2.9, a splitting criterion for products of minuscule homogeneous varieties is provided: a vector bundle over this product splits if and only if it does the restriction to the corresponding products of the unions of the \(2\)-dimensional Schubert varieties of each factor. Moreover, triviality criteria of this kind, \(V\) trivial if and only if \(V|_D\) is trivial, are provided (see Theorem \textit{triviality criteria} in the Introduction) and an elaboration for toric varieties of these criteria is presented.
