A relative equilibrium solution of a dynamical system is a constant shape solution, invariant under the flow of the system. The authors study the behavior of Hamiltonian systems near relative equilibria. The motion separates in motion along the equilibrium solution and motion inside a slice transversal to it. An explicit decomposition of the equations of motion for Hamiltonian vector fields is given and the effect of time reversing symmetry is also studied.
