The authors consider the Marcinkiewicz integral operator \[ \mu_{\Omega,\gamma}f(x)=\bigg(\int_0^\infty|F_{\Omega,t}(f)(x)|^2\frac{dt}{t^{3+2\gamma}}\bigg)^{1/2}, \] where \[ F_{\Omega,t}(f)(x)=\int_{|x-y|\leq t}\frac{\Omega(x-y)}{|x-y|^{n-1}}f(y)\,dy, \] and \(\Omega\) is a homogeneous function of degree zero in \(\mathbb R^n\setminus\{0\}\), with mean zero on the sphere \(S^{n-1}\). Their main result proves the following boundedness for the commutator \([b,\mu_{\Omega,\gamma}]\): Let \(b\) be a function in the Sobolev space \(\dot L_\gamma^{n/\gamma}\), \(1<p<\infty\), \(0<\gamma<\min\{n/2,n/p\}\), and assume \(\langle\Omega,Y_m\rangle=0\) for all spherical harmonic polynomials \(Y_m\) of degree \(m\leq N\), where \(N\) is an integer larger than \(\gamma\tilde p/2-1\), and \(\tilde p=\max\{p,p'\}\). Then, \[ \big\|[b,\mu_{\Omega,\gamma}]f\big\|_{L^p}\leq C\|f\|_{\dot L^p_\gamma}. \] Similar results are proved for \(0<\gamma<n/2\), under the condition that \(\Omega\in L(\log^+L)^\beta(S^{n-1})\) for some \(|1-2/p|<\beta<1\). The case \(\gamma=0\) corresponds to the classical commutator \([b,\mu_\Omega]\), first considered in [\textit{A. Torchinsky} and \textit{S. Wang}, Colloq. Math. 60/61, No. 1, 235--243 (1990; Zbl 0731.42019)].
