Given a quiver \(Q\), not necessarily finite, the authors consider the path coalgebra \(kQ\) and classify the graded Hopf algebra structures which can be defined over it. Let \(G\) be a group, a ramification datum \(r=\sum_{C\in{\mathcal C}}r_CC\) of \(G\) is a positive central element of the group ring of \(G\), where \(\mathcal C\) is the set of conjugacy classes. Associated to \(G\) and \(r\) the authors introduce the concept of Hopf quiver as the quiver having as vertices the elements of \(G\) and \(r_C\) arrows from \(x\) to \(cx\) for each \(x\in G\) and \(c\in C\). It is shown that the path coalgebra admits a graded Hopf algebra structure if and only if the quiver is the Hopf quiver of some group with respect to a ramification datum. The multiplication of two paths is also described.
