To any left Hopf algebroid, and any stable anti Yetter-Drinfeld contramodule over it, a cocyclic module is associated whose cohomology groups are proven to carry a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure. Applying this to an enveloping Hopf algebroid \(A^{\mathsf e}\), it follows in particular that the Hochschild cohomology of an associative unital algebra \(A\) carries a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure whenever \(A\) is an \(A^{\mathsf e}\)-contramodule. This extends earlier examples of a symmetric algebra \(A\) in [\textit{L. Menichi}, \(K\)-Theory 32, No. 3, 231--251 (2004; Zbl 1101.19003)] and [\textit{T. Tradler}, Ann. Inst. Fourier 58, No. 7, 2351--2379 (2008; Zbl 1218.16004)], and more generally, a Frobenius algebra \(A\) with semisimple Nakayama automorphism in [\textit{T. Lambre, G. Zhou} and \textit{A. Zimmermann}, J. Algebra 446, 103--131 (2016; Zbl 1344.16009)] and [\textit{Y.V. Volkov}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 220, No. 10, 3384--3402 (2016; Zbl 1362.16009)].
