Given opposite Borel subgroups \(B\) and \(B^ -\), in a complex semisimple Lie group \(G\) and denote the maximal torus \(B \cap B^ -\) by \(H\). Let \({\mathfrak g} \subset {\mathfrak b} \subset {\mathfrak h}\) be the algebras of \(G\), \(B\), respectively \(H\). Then it is well known that the cohomology algebra \(h^ \bullet (G/B, \mathbb{C})\) of the flag variety \(G/B\) is isomorphic to the coordinate ring \(A({\mathcal N} \cap {\mathfrak h})\) of the scheme theoretic intersection of the nilpotent variety \({\mathcal N} \subset {\mathfrak g}\) and the Cartan subalgebra \({\mathfrak h}\). In the present article this result is extended to the Schubert varieties \(X_ w = \overline {BwB/B}\) in \(G/B\), where \(w\) is in the Weyl group \(W = N(H)/N\). To this end the author introduces a stratification of \({\mathcal N}\), given by the closure \({\mathcal N}_ w\) of \(\text{Ad} (Bw^{-1} B) {\mathfrak u}\) for \(w \in W\), where \({\mathfrak u}\) is the nilradical of \({\mathfrak b}\). The key to the proof of the extension is to produce an isomorphism \(A({\mathcal N}_ w \cap {\mathfrak h}) \to A(Z_ e \cap X_ w)\), where \(Z_ e\) is the zero scheme of an algebraic vector bundle studied by \textit{E. Akyildiz} and the author [Manuscr. Math. 58, 473-486 (1987; Zbl 0626.14017)].
