The authors prove some results about the first Steklov eigenvalue \(d\) of the biharmonic operator in bounded domains. Firstly, authors extend Fichera's principle of duality [\textit{G. Fichera}, Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei, VIII. Ser., Rend., Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Nat. 19, 411--418 (1956; Zbl 0071.31801)] to a wide class of nonsmooth domains, secondly, the optimization of \(d_1\) for varying domains, is studied. They disprove a long-standing conjecture, showing that it is false.
