An operator T acting in \(L^ p(X)\), X \(\sigma\)-finite measure space, is regularizing if \(\| T\|_{1\to \infty}\) is finite; and it is power-bounded if \((\| T^ n\|_{p\to p})\) is a bounded sequence for every \(1\leq p\leq \infty\). For a power-bounded, regularizing operator T, some results relating the possible polynomial decay of \((\| T^ n\|_{1\to \infty})\) to the \(L^ p-L^ q\) boundedness properties, for \(q>p\), of the operators \(T(I-T)^{-a}\), \(a>0\), are proved. This results are applied to the study of random walks on groups. In this way the results of \textit{N. Th. Varopoulos} [Bull. Sci. Math., II. Ser. 111, 333-342 (1987; Zbl 0626.22004)] are obtained, sometimes improved, using more elementary arguments.
