The remarkable theorem is proved that if v,w\(\equiv 2,4\) (mod 6) and \(v\geq 12.54 w,\) there is a Steiner quadruple system of order v containing as a subsystem of a Steiner quadruple system of order w. This is a major step in addressing the question of whether \(v\geq 2w\) is sufficient. In establishing the result on subdesigns, the paper gives a marvelous exposition of construction techniques for Steiner quadruple systems and related designs. The presentation of new quadrupling and hextupling constructions is particularly important.
