The book provides an introduction to nonlinear and global optimization for students of mathematics and interdisciplinary sciences. After the introduction with many practical examples, the author presents the necessary definitions and (without proofs) the most important assertions about differentiability, convexity and first-order optimality conditions (Chapter 1-3). A special chapter (Chapter 4) is included for the discussion of effectiveness and efficiency of general optimization algorithms. The last three chapters are devoted for the presentation of special optimization algorithms: Chapter 5 for nonlinear programming algorithms, Chapter 6 for deterministic global optimization algorithms and Chapter 7 for stochastic global optimization algorithms. The text is illustrated by a great deal of selected examples and exercises.
