The author investigates the asymptotic distribution of the spectra of Hermitian Toeplitz matrices and applies the results to the spectral analysis of preconditioned Toeplitz matrices in terms of the generating function of these matrices. The impact on the convergence behavior of the related preconditioned conjugate gradient method is analyzed and the special case of block Toeplitz matrices is addressed as well.
