In [\textit{D. Jungnickel}, J. Algebra 90, 119-132 (1984; Zbl 0548.05015) and J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 62, 66-92 (1993; Zbl 0846.51005)] the question of embedding nets defined by partial spreads into affine planes that are not necessarily translation planes was first introduced and an extensive treatment of transversal-free nets was given. In the paper under review the authors construct transversal-free translation nets of order \(q^{2t}\) and deficiency \(q^t - q\), for any prime power \(q \neq 2\) and any odd integer \(t > 1\). This extends the work of one of the authors [\textit{N. L. Johnson}, J. Geometry 69, 131-148 (2000; Zbl 0980.51002)], where the case \(t = 2\) was considered.
