Let \(\mathfrak g\) a Lie algebra and \(g\) an inner product on \(\mathfrak g\). If \(J\) is a complex structure that is also an isometry of \(g\), then \((\mathfrak g,J,g)\) is an Hermitian Lie algebra. The corresponding simply connected Lie group \(G\) with left-invariant Riemannian metric and complex structures induced by \((g,J)\) is also called Hermitian. If, moreover, the Kähler 2-form defined by \(\omega(x,y)=g(Jx,y),\;x,y\in\mathfrak g\) is closed then both the Hermitian Lie algebra and its corresponding Lie group are called Kähler. In this paper, the authors study Hermitian Lie groups for which the complex structure is abelian, that is \([Jx,Jy]=[x,y]\) for all \(x,y\in\mathfrak g\). In particular, they prove strong structure results for those Hermitian Lie groups which are Kähler yielding to the characterization of simply connected Lie groups admitting left-invariant Kähler structures with \(J\) abelian. Indeed any such Lie group is a product of 2-dimensional hyperbolic spaces and an abelian factor. Finally, the authors consider the first canonical connection associated to a Hermitian Lie groups which is defined by \(\nabla^1_xy=\frac12(\nabla^g_xy-J\nabla_x^gJy)\), \(x,y\in\mathfrak g\) (\(\nabla^g\) is the Levi-Civita connection determined by \(g\)). They show that, if \(J\) is abelian and \(\nabla^1\) is flat, then \(G\) is abelian.
