In the author's earlier papers [Lect. Notes Math. 788, 223-244 (1980; Zbl 0442.57017) and Osaka J. Math. 21, 71-80 (1984; Zbl 0553.57012)], he constructed spaces \(\Gamma_{\ell}(k)\) and X(k) such that \(\pi_{n+k}(\Gamma_{\ell}(k))\cong Imm_{\ell}(n,k)\) and \(\pi_{n+k}(X(k))\cong S(n,k)\), where \(Imm_{\ell}(n,k)\) is the cobordism group of immersions f: \(M^ n\to {\mathbb{R}}^{n+k}\) without (\(\ell +1)\)-tuple points, and S(n,k) the cobordism group of smooth maps f: \(M^ n\to {\mathbb{R}}^{n+k}\) with a certain type of singularities. In the paper under review, using these spaces, the author shows that if \(x\in \Omega_*(M)\) is an oriented bordism class of an orientable smooth manifold M with 3 dim x\(<2 \dim M\), then for some power \(2^ r\) of 2 the bordism class \(2^ rx\) contains an immersion. He modifies the spaces \(\Gamma_{\ell}(k)\), X(k), and obtains a sufficient condition for any embedding j: \(M\to E(\xi)\) to be cobordant to an embedding \(j': M'\to E(\xi)\) with \(j'(M')\) not tangent to the fibres of a vector bundle \(\xi\), where E(\(\xi)\) is the total space of \(\xi\). He also investigates the metastable homotopies of the Thom spectra in relation to the modified \(\Gamma_{\ell}(k)\) and X(k).
