An algorithm of mapping unstructured grids onto structured (auxiliary) grids and further its application to multigrid methods is developed. In terms of the computational grid parameters, estimates for both general upper and lower bounds of the condition number of this preconditioned problem are obtained. An investigation of the applicability of this preconditioner is performed on several examples. Also it is shown that the method can be applied in a number of cases to obtain an optimal preconditioner. Corresponding rules are formulated.
