It is shown that, when discontinuous solutions are computed by monotonous difference schemes, strong oscillations of the difference derivatives may occur, substantially reducing the local orders of convergence of the schemes. For a set of first-order-accurate explicit schemes with an artificial viscosity, as well as for a set of second-order-accurate difference schemes for smooth solutions, criteria that guarantee the absence of such oscillations are obtained.
