The authors suggest and analyze a modification of the phase-function method. In this modification the principal part of the solution is separated and the auxiliary equations for the remainder are integrated. This enables one to calculate, in a stable fashion, rapidly oscillating and abruptly changing solutions, including equations with singularities and on the infinite interval. Sufficient conditions for the applicability of the method are given. A generalization of results from the spectral theory of Sturm-Liouville problems is obtained.
