The quasi-potential equation for the electromagnetic interaction of spinless particles involves a \(\delta\)-function term coming from the effective vector potential. It is demonstrated that the perturbation theoretic contribution of this term to the hydrogen levels is recovered from a suitable self-adjoint extension of the relativistic Hamiltonian which is fixed by just one (say, the lowest) energy eigenvalue. The same self-adjoint extension gives rise to a well-defined s-wave relativistic Coulomb scattering matrix in the presence of a \(\delta\)-function potential.
