This paper contains the revised version of an old manuscript by G. Freud, based on a talk given in 1978. Due to the important progress that has been made in the field lately (including a partial resolution of one of the conjectures cited), the paper under review is best seen in its proper context if the reader consults the major work ''Géza Freud, Orthogonal polynomials and Christoffel functions, A case study'', by \textit{P. Nevai} [J. Approximation Theory 48, 3--167 (1986; Zbl 0606.42020)].
